What distinguishes one stone from another, in terms of value and beauty, is close to perfection. This notion of perfection was formalized by the GIA (Gemmological Institute of America) through four essential criteria, known as the 4 Cs: carat, color, clarity, and cut.

C1 · The carat
A carat is the weight, and by extension, the size, of a diamond. This standard unit of measurement originates from the carob seed, which was once used to weigh precious stones.
One carat is equal to 0.2 grams.
However, a heavier diamond does not necessarily mean better quality. For a diamond to be considered perfect, color, clarity, and cut must also be taken into account.

C2 · Color
A perfect diamond is characterized by almost complete transparency. However, most diamonds exhibit slight tints, ranging from yellow to brown. The more colorless a diamond is, the rarer and more valuable it is.
The GIA uses a color scale ranging from D, representing a completely colorless diamond, to Z, which indicates a light yellow hue.

C3 · Clarity
Diamonds are formed under conditions of extreme heat and pressure, which can result in the presence of internal and external inclusions in many stones.
The quantity, location, color and size of these imperfections determine the clarity of a diamond.
The fewer flaws a diamond has, the rarer and more valuable it is considered. GIA standards establish 11 clarity levels, ranging from FL (flawless) to I3 (with visible inclusions).

C4 · Size
A diamond's cut determines its shape and proportions after polishing. The most classic shape is the brilliant cut, which is rounded. However, there are also other cut types, such as square, marquise, oval, pear, heart, and emerald.
A quality cut is essential to establish an optimal balance between the diamond and light, thus influencing its brightness (the combination of white light reflected inside and outside the stone), colored reflections (called "fire") and scintillation (the contrasting play of light between white and black).
The GIA grades diamond cut on a scale from “Excellent” to “Poor.”
